Cocktail Drawing.

When my good friend, Popicn, suggested the cocktail club get together and have a theme show of cocktails, cigarettes and coffee. I said, “great! sure!” Then I promptly forgot all about it.

I’m not a fan of themed art-shows. I’ll go to a gallery to see one, but to participate, well, I’m a non-conformist. I like to come up with my own ideas. And what goes on inside my head rarely conforms to themed art shows. Besides, I can never seem to come up with something that doesn’t seem stupid. Later, after the show has been up and taken down, I might think “oh, I could’ve done this, or that.”

Unfortunately, this time, I have to do art for a theme show. At first I just stared blankly at my sketchbook cursing inside my head, and sometimes outloud. Then, I decided that it would be a challenge to myself to have to come up with at least four pieces to put in this show since it really is going to happen (in November).
I am proud to say, I currently have multiple sketches, three drawings (one is here), and half a painting for this show.

2009…

For once, I can say that this year wasn’t so bad. my career situation seemed okay-ish: Recorded quite a few podcasts with the cocktail club, I had some art exhibits, sold some work, some college student claims to have written a paper about me! I think I found some sort of balance with money. I don’t need to buy everything at the GAP or Target, just what I need and maybe every once in awhile I can splurge on a book or a sweater, but not all the time. Its compromise, like a relationship. Speaking of which – hooray for me, I never thought I’d find someone who I felt like I clicked with the instant we met. Someone I feel comfortable with, love, am passionate for, who listens! whose there – who isn’t always too busy. People say we’re a cute couple. Okay neither of us are perfect, but it feels perfect as perfect as two humans can be. Yeah, I’m head over heels in love – love, love makes the world tick, go round… and to hell with the rest!

I did attempt to keep up with current events and current music. The world isn’t perfect, but thankfully I still have music to help me dream that the world might not always suck. That one day I can marry a woman, have an abortion if I damn well please, have the same rights as hetero-couples and live peacefully and happily ever after -  isn’t that what we all want? As for keeping up with music, I have daytrotter and stereogum to thank (once again) for that. Otherwise, I still be spinning disks from three years ago, like when I thought I bought the new Tegan and Sara only to realize that I had bought their 2007 release, “The Con,” which I recommend. If Newbury Comics would hurry up and restock their shelves, I could actually use my giftcard and get the new Tegan and Sara which is called, “Sainthood” not “The Con.”

What cds/records/mp3′s I did buy (or receive) this year (that came out this year) that were fabulous and I highly recommend, are the following, in no particular order:

Actor – St. Vincent
Fate to Fatal – the Breeders
Two Suns – Bat for Lashes
My Maudlin Career – Camera Obscura
Wild Young Hearts – the Noisettes
Noble Beast – Andrew Bird
Sonic Youth – the Eternal
Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Its Blitz
Morissey – Year of Refusal

Also you can see some interesting photos here from the speakeasy event, so you need to click on the little link that says ‘speakeasy’ once you get to the Providence Pin-up site… and if you really like them, you can buy them!

hot on the inside, hot on the outside

The party was good. I wish I didn’t have to leave early for another day at the grind, but such is life.

Chris’s friend, Brian, bought “yes-woman” and the drawing version of “still the answer?” I got a voicemail this afternoon from Marc claiming someone else bought a piece. I wanted to get my tarot cards read but I spent all my money (on my person) at the liquor store before the party, which I know doesn’t make me sound too much like an alcoholic. After Brian paid me I was too tired to go back inside so maybe next time. There was a lot of people I didn’t know and I didn’t really talk to most of them. I talked to some guy who told me about how last night like 40 years ago, he was at Woodstock. It was a funny story: allegedly him and I believe his brother were stuck in traffic heading to a relatives or home but there’s Woodstock causing all this traffic.. so they decided what the hell?! and went! and got grounded after.

Yesterday I got this email that was kind of generalized and asked for more information or something from a craigslist post and the only one I had recently posted was a call for art for the Lizzie Borden show so I just gave them more info and told them to go to facebook and the follow the group sonic and sue put up about it. Today… I receive an email that claims that the picture is ‘great’ and ‘sexy’ and I’m thinking what picture? the one advertising the Lizzie show?! she goes on, of course she does… to explain how she’s married and is looking for a little fun on the side?! Can’t wait to put the call for art for “sex at the X” exhibit up!

Gallery Craziness….

Its been a busy week… coffee meets, dates that I hope call back… and the 20th anniversary of the Gallery X Public Hanging!

this picture of the Cocktail Club makes me laugh, it looks as if the painting behind us is embarrassed for us…

The show at Gallery X was insane… so many people… and it was crazy hotter than hell inside. There was an assload of artwork (most of it for sale *hint*hint). I don’t think I’ve seen it that jam packed with work in awhile – we took everyone with money who entered.

I kind of feel like I need to go back and check everything out again.. I tend to get overwhelmed at openings and don’t always get to take in everything I want to – I get over stimulated and I start to people watch and forget about the art I meant to look at. Stimulation seems to be my on-going theme this week….

Pop and I keep joking around and telling each other: “if you chuck it in a few times, its not sex..”

(I stole these pictures from Larissa she’d be the lovely blonde artist in the photos.. her hubby, Mike, took some of them, he’s the dude in the red shirt.)

Nice and not so nice.

I’ve been stuck in the house with a bad cold so its been nothing but reading, movie watching and listening to one cd/mp3 after another.  The other day I contemplated listening to all my cds in alphabetical order just for shits and giggles. I didn’t do it.  Though, I did watch episodes of Buffy, Family Guy, and Bones. I also watched a mediocre horror movie called “White Noise.” I got it from the local library which never seems to have a good selection of dvds. They always have movies that are at least three years old, which should be a good selection for someone who seems to miss movies when they actually come out but… its not. Its been awhile since I watched a quality horror flick, the last one was this Korean film called “the host.” It wasn’t scary but it was suspenseful, unpredictable, and well done, which is something I can not say about “White Noise.”

Since I’ve been sitting (or laying) on my ass, I decided to sit my ass in front of the computer for a long amount of time. I finally got around to checking out Kristin Hersh’s website, I haven’t visited in awhile I’m abashed to admit. Its all newly designed by Lakuna which is the design studio of Misi and Dave Narcizo (Throwing Muses drummer). Dave is the sort of dude I’d shake hands with, if I weren’t completely intimidated by the fact that he’s the drummer the Throwing Muses.

Kristin Hersh put up new songs on her Cashmusic site. For once, I actually paid for my mp3′s. In her song, “Sand” I swore she was saying “Rape!” at the beginning of the song. I was half expecting a “don’t do it, because its not nice..” in there. I don’t believe she has any rape or really political songs, but I figured maybe she was going in a new direction with this one. I tried to look up the song lyrics because sometimes I just hear weird things in songs, like that Throwing Muses song where I swore she was proclaiming: “I need a fuck..” turns out it was “fork.” Or that Pixies song “Levitate Me” where it sounds like Frank Black says, “kick a baby.” Before I get hate mail, I don’t condone kicking babies, but that part of the song strikes me funny because he seems to say it with such gusto.. and its funny because its wrong.

So anyhow, Kristin Hersh is not saying, “Rape!” at the beginning of “Sand.” I couldn’t find the lyrics on her site, but there was an explanation of the song, which had nothing to do with rape, so there goes that theory. Maybe if she’s reading this… she has my permission to write “Rape! don’t do it because its not nice.” though it sounds more like subject for an Amanda Palmer song.

I feel I should explain “Rape! don’t do it because its not nice” was a comment one of my fellow cocktail club members proclaimed in our podcast about me blogging to help get donations for RAINN (the rape abuse incest national network). We were trying desperately to not be assholes about the subject, so of coures of us spewed that out. I think that was the same podcast in which I spewed out a quote from Victorian Erotica which was something along the lines of “fuck me with a prick of hate, not love!”

link mania!

New sonic youth song “sacred trickster” is amazing, as expected. Kim Gordon sings this one. You can find the mp3 on their site: http://www.sonicyouth.com/main/

There’s also a crazy video on stereogum of them performing another song from the upcoming cd – I swore at several points during this video that Thurston Moore was taking Kim out: http://stereogum.com/archives/video/new-sonic-youth-calming-the-snake-live-in-chile_062121.html

Also, here’s the new podcast from the cocktail club (also amazing): http://www.myspace.com/thecocktailclub..podcast
